S was dounded in 1881 as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, for the purpose of assisting Jews to escape persecution in Russia (later the Soviet Union) and Eastern Europe. As Jews fled mounting anti-semitism in Europe, HAIS provided housing, meals, jobs, legal assistance, and transportation to Jewish refugees. Beginning in the 2000s, HAIS ceased its exclusive focus on Jews and began assisting refugees from all over the world who face persecution because of who they are. Grounded in Jewish values and history, HIAS is dedicated to rescuing all people whose lives are endangered because they are who they are. Click the link above to visit HIAS' homepage.en_US
