Abstract

Sholem Aleichem is probably the best-known among Yiddish writers. He was born in Eastern Europe in 1859 as Shalom Rabinovitz. He emigrated to the United States in 1906. Often called "the Jewish Mark Twain" because of his ability to capture the dialect and voice of common people, Sholem Aleichem's literary legacy He wrote primarily about Eastern European Jews with wit, humor and sensitivity. His well-known Tevye stories were the inspiration for the Broadway musical, "Fiddler on the Roof," which enjoyed international success, was translated into many different languages and performed in theaters throughout the world.
