Abstract

In this article, scholar Cornel West contextualizes the belief of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel within the Jewish prophetic tradition. West describes Heschel as "greatest exemplar of the prophetic legacy of Jerusalem in the most anti-Jewish century of recorded time." It was Heschel's view of Judaism, particularly in the wake of the holocaust, that led him to work closely with Martin Luther King and to march side-by-side with him during the struggle for civil rights in Selma and Birmingham, Alabama.
