Abstract
Nominated by President Barack Obama in 2013, Janet Yellen was the first woman to serve as chair of the Federal Reserve Board. In 2020 President elect Joe Biden nominated her to be the first woman to serve as Secretary of the Treasury. This article describes her background, her education and her academic career, during which she served as professor of economics in a number of prestigious universities.
