Abstract

In this article Judith Brin Ingber discusses the place of dance within Jewish cultural and religious life and how the link between Judaism and danced flowered and evolved under the influence of Jewish immigrants to the United States. She details how American Jewish women in particular have played widely varying roles in all aspects of dance, including performance, choreography, founding and directing companies, teaching, dance therapy, etc. Her discussion the development of Jewish dance in the United States is framed by her detailing of the contributions of specific American Jewish women dancers over many decades beginning in the early twentieth century.
